BILLY 'BEAR' HAMPTON 1939-2010
Billy ‘Bear’ Hampton, 71, of Ola, Idaho, passed away June 17, 2010, at the West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell, Idaho.
A celebration of ‘Bear's’ life was held at the Ola Community Hall June 23, 2010. Please visit the Ola Community web site, www.olacommunitynewsletter.com to see the balloons. Bear always said it just was not a party without balloons.
Billy Wayne Shrum was born May ll, 1939, in Jay, Oklahoma, the son of Rossine Shrum, of Webb City, Missouri. He grew up in Wyndotte, Oklahoma. Billy married Patsy Coffman in 1957. They made there home in the Warrensburg, Concordia, Missouri area.
As an unattended youngster Billy grew and was nurtured by nature around him and the welcome homes of the families of Wyndotte. He learned early in life to hunt and fish. Building on that experience, he became to those whose lives he touched, the “professional” to consult for hunting and fishing wherever he was.
Rodeo competition attracted Billy. He rode bulls, roped, and finished that career as a Rodeo Clown, a very appropriate vocation for a man who was interested in making people happy.
Billy, known as “Sugar Bear” drove for National Carriers trucking firm until his retirement in 1989. Every mile he traveled added a new acquaintance. It was impossible to say hello without Billy knowing where you were from and why you were here. He took the time to be personally interested in every person he met. He always remembered your name and the vehicle you drove.
After retirement Billy ‘Bear’ came to the South Fork Lodge in Lowman, Idaho to manage the “Dirt Room” bar. He operated South Fork Adventures as an outfitter and guide, until January of 1995, when the Lodge burned.
Billy married Ellen Shaw on December 28, 1995. They were married in Ola at the Ola Inn. Bear occupied the stool just inside the front door at the Inn ready to offer “wisdom”, stories, and advice to anyone who entered. The focus of his life in these last months was to be sure the door was unlocked and coffee ready to serve at seven AM. Bear's health had been failing – those cigarettes and diabetes – for better than a year, but he did not allow those who stopped by to know. His dear friend Walt was close at his side to take up the slack.
He was preceeded in death by his mother, Rossine Hampton and step-father Irvin Hampton, grandson, Bret Gilliland, his brother-in-law Jerry Callihan, and two nephews Mathew and Luke Callihan, and his former wife Patsy Howe.
Survivors include: three children, Debra Gillihand, James Hampton, and Darla Collins, eight grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren, and a large extended family.

MOTHER NATURE...
...shows her strength again Monday night. With winds upwards to 66 mph, Mother Nature left the Ola Valley without power, several broken down trees and hay scattered to the next door neighbors field. Nesbitt Lane seems to have taken the brunt of the storm, with broken down trees blocking the Lane and trees damaging a tack shed and a pickup. Power was restored just before noon on Tuesday and no injuries reported.

A GREAT SENDOFF FOR BEAR...

The gathering at the Ola Hall to celebrate Bear's life was attended by well over 200 of Bear's friends and family. The Ola Ladies Club took care of all the preparations, and many friends and neighbors brought a wide variety of good things to eat. Ellen memorialized Bear in a loving way that we could all relate to, allowing each of us to remember him in our own way.

Ellen remarked that Bear always said, "It's not a party without balloons". In recognition of this, Ellen had 71 helium balloons for the family to release in Bear's honor. After the meal, we all went outside to watch Ellen and her family release the balloons. It was a touching conclusion to a wonderful get together.
We will miss you, Bear.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE

The Memorial Day service was well attended. Everyone met in the Ola Cemetery where flags were raised and the pledge was said. The people were then led into the church by the students where everyone joined in singing patriotic songs. Then followed the reading of tributes in honor of our departed veterans. The crowd followed the children back outside where crosses and flags were placed on the graves of the veterans. The warmth of the crowd and the enthusiasm of the students took the chill out of the air.
WOMEN'S RETREAT IN JULY
The Women's Retreat will be at the Lutheran Heights Bible Camp outside Stanley July 16-18. This is an inspiring weekend of learning, fellowship and fun. The theme this year is Psalm 121:1-2, "I left my eyes to the hills-from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who makes heaven and earth". The leader this year is Kristen Koskella. The cost is $75.00 before July 1 and $80.00 after. The cost covers 5 meals and lodging. This is an awesome experience. Please plan to attend. Last year we had 10, how many this year? If you would like a registration form, please contact Joyce.

SYRINGA LADIES CLUB TEA
What a beautiful day for a club tea!! That's just what Wednesday was, a beautiful day as the Syringa Ladies Club hosted their annual Spring Tea. The event was held at May Hunter's home, which in itself is a treat with her beautiful backyard patio and flowers in full bloom. There was a variety of delicious food served and great conversation to go with it. The program was first aid at home and on the road, and fire safety. There were lots of door prizes and petunias for everyone. Ten members of the Ola Ladies Club were present. Thank you Syringa Ladies and May for opening your lovely home to us.
SODA SPRINGS-The Movie
Thank you "anonymous" for the question regarding Soda Springs (the movie).
I don't have any pictures of the filming or the actors. The release date for the movie is September 9, 2010.
The residents of Gem County, Idaho are very excited for the release of Soda Springs. As most of us know, quite a few scenes were shot in Sweet and Emmett.
Click here or here for information on the movie, cast and location.

A MOVIE NEEDS AN OLD BARN.....
....located in the Sweet/Ola area. This barn would serve as the primary location for a horror/thriller movie. Ideally, this barn would be old, wooden, in an isolated spot and have a dirt floor. Also if power is close, for night shots. It would be best if it were a non-working barn, so no one gets in any ones way. They hope to shoot the movie Friday, Saturday and Sundays, July 16-18 and July 23-25, both during the day and at night. This is a "no-budget" movie with an all volunteer cast and crew, so they don't have resources to pay a location rental fee but will compensate for any power costs.
Do you know of an old barn that would fit this description?
If you would like to read the contact letter, just let me know and I will send you a copy. I will also have a copy of it at the Ola Inn.
