7 Billion--- What was the population when you were born?  How much has it increased since?  Check out http://www.7billionandme.org/  Based on the information I provided, approx. 2.9 billion people were alive when I was born, 6.9 billion have been born since and approx. 2.7 billion have died.  Sadly, since I was born an estimated  966,120 of the world's 10 million species have become extinct.

HAUNTED HALL IS READY FOR YOU

Yesterday, the Haunted Hall committee spend all afternoon decorating for tomorrow night.  Lots and lots of work goes into transforming the otherwise normal community gathering place, to the scariest place in Ola.  Please stop by the Haunted Hall, tomorrow evening, between 6-9.  That is, of course, if you dare.

If you are setting up a table and handing out candy, please be there approx. 5:30.

A NOTE FROM TOM BLESSINGER

Attention Hunters and Sportsmen:  Just a reminder not to park your vehicles in front of residences, corrals, loading chutes, gates or driveways.  This time of year cattle, sheep and horses are being moved and gathered using little used access routes.  Also farm machinery and other vehicles may be using these routes.  Cattle and sheep are being trailed along the public roads.  Use caution and slow speeds when approaching these herds.
Help maintain good relationships with the land owners.

Gem County rancher Drew Blessinger was chosen as one of two pick-up men of the year (2011) at the Idaho Cowboy Rodeo Finals held at the Idaho Equine Center.  These two were chosen by their fellow rodeo contestants.  Drew runs cows at Sweet and is a member of the Ola "C" Grazing Unit running on West Mountain and he runs the family feedlot and farm at Sand Hollow.  He also owns Terra West Construction Co. and Superior Rodeo Co.  Drew has two sons, Colton and Wyatt, who help him.

A parade is being held in Emmett on November 5th at 1:00 to honor and welcome the 116th Army units return.  If you would like to participate and have a patriotic float or vehicle with lots of flags in the parade, please contact Lou Shelton-447-0496 or Tom Blessinger-602-0124.  We want to show our appreciation and give thanks to them.  Plan on attending!

Now is the time of fall gathering of livestock.  It has been such nice weather that the cattle do not want to come home or drop to lower elevations.  Everyone is gathering their cattle for fall and eventually winter feeding.  Numbers of lost cattle have not been calculated yet.

NEED YOUR FURNACE LOOKED AT?

With cold temperatures here, it might be time to have your furnace serviced.  Harold with H & M Heating will be in Ola next week.  If you would like him to look at your furnace, please give me a call and I will see that he puts you on his schedule.   Kim @ 584-9030.  Harold has serviced the Hall, my furnace and several others in Ola. His work is good and prices reasonable, especially if he can see several in one trip.

OLA SCHOOL WELCOMES STATE SUPERINTENDENT TOM LUNA

State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Luna, visited schools in Emmett School District Tuesday, October 25.

  Included in his itinerary were the Sweet-Montour School and the Ola School and Ola Library.  Mr. Luna has made it an annual practice since his first term as state superintendent in 2007 to visit schools throughout Idaho. He talks to teachers and administrators about what they are doing that is new and innovative in educating the young people of the state.  He listens to and takes note of any concerns they may have, as well.

    Mrs. Davis shared with Mr. Luna the solar panel which provides power to the school, the raised-bed gardens, skyping with a partner school in New Zealand, and the school's certified wildlife habitat irrigated with drip irrigation, She showed Mr. Luna the Ola Library and talked of its activities in support of the school.

The nationwide test will occur at 11 a.m. MDT and 10 a.m. PDT on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and may last up to three and a half minutes.The public will hear a message indicating that "This is a test." The audio message will be the same for radio, television and cable.

DEER HUNTING ENDS TODAY and ELK SEASON STARTS IN THE AM

The Retired Educators are collecting used coats and sweatshirts, and new underclothes and socks for the school children.  Gloria will be taking these items to her meeting Monday evening. If you get a chance this weekend, go through your closets, see if you have any items to donate and take them to her house. Thanks!

FUTURE OLA FIREFIGHTERS..

The Ola school kids and Ola firefighters had a great time Friday morning. The Ola Fire department brought two fire trucks up to the Ola Elementary so that the kids could learn how the trucks operate.  They had lots of fun with the sirens and handling the fire hoses.  Thank you to the firemen that took the time out of their day to make the kids' day.

Historic Moments — it’s not just a thought or idea. It’s the title of a Gem County history book the Messenger Index recently published. Using archive copies of old newspapers, stories included in the book run from 1893 to 2010, making it a book that will spark the interest of nearly everyone.

In addition to stories from days of yore, there are photo illustrations. Historic Moments will take readers from times of the early pioneers settling the area, in their own words as reported in the weekly newspaper.

......is the Annual Harvest Dinner at the Ola Hall.  The dinner will start at 12 noon.  There will be lots of old cars and of course, plenty of good food!!  If you have an old car that you would like to show off, bring it down!!

Also, this coming Saturday, is a Ola Rough Striders/Relay For Life wrap up meeting.  This will be at the Ola Inn at 10:00AM.
