THE PROGRAM MUST GO ON!
Although Mother Nature didn't provide a great day to be outside, that didn't stop the Ola Elementary children from putting on a wonderful Memorial Day program inside the Church. The children looked so nice as they sang our favorite patriotic songs and read meaningful verses. The rain kept them from placing the Crosses and Flags, that will be done at a later time. RODEO IN OLA
Bike Rodeo, that is! The Sheriff's Department, Rec District and Kiwanis held a bike rodeo at the Ola Elementary, Wednesday, May 25th. Each chikd received a new bicycle helmet. It was a beautiful day!

CANCELLATION DUE TO THE EQUINE VIRUS
http://www.biglooprodeo.com/ and check out their announcement to cancel the rodeo for this weekend !!! The trade show is also being cancelled. They said they will re-schedule later this year. People are taking every precaution with this equine virus. Many of the arenas are shut down till June 1st, and many of the horse groups have chosen not to ride in Parade America this weekend. Keep your horses home and safe.
**Also, the Nevada Quarter Horse Association has cancelled a show scheduled for this Saturday at the Elko County Fairgrounds.

GEM COUNTY ELECTION INFORMATION
Of the 57 people that voted in the Ola Precinct, 32 voted "Yes" and 25 voted "No". Gem County numbers were 1,926 "Yes" and 1,492 "No". Many thanks to Norma, Reeta, Lois and Joanie, our poll workers!

ROAD FROM HIGH VALLEY TO SMITH'S FERRY
The road from High Valley to Smith's Ferry was opened today. It is still icy and muddy so 4-wheel drive is highly recommended!

....I had a call this AM wondering if the road from High Valley to Smiths Ferry was open. No, it is not! I didn't think so but I called Bill J. to make sure. He said that there is still lots of ice and mud that make it impassable.

INFORMATION ON BURN PERMITS
STATE BURN PERMITS NEEDED EFFECTIVE MAY 10
BOISE, IDAHO – Effective May 10, the Idaho Department of Lands will require those planning on conducting burning in non-urban areas to have a burn permit.
Burn permits are available by contacting the SW Idaho Department of Lands at 208-334-3488. The permits can be issued through a web based program, but the office needs to be contacted prior to issuance.
The Boise National Forest no longer issues resident burn permits.
Permits are not required for recreational campfires.
Debris burning is a common cause of escaped fires. Residents are encouraged to learn more about burning safely. Brochures are available at agencies offices.

I'd like to thank Wayne Rush for taking the time to come up to Ola last night. He did a great job explaining the proposed levy and answering questions that the audience had. Although attendance from the community wasn't great, those of us that were present are happy with our new understanding of how important this proposed levy is. Whether you are for or against the proposed levy, VOTE next Tuesday, May 17th at the Ola Hall, 8AM-8PM!!!

...as of today, the fire danger sign will be updated as needed. The actual sign is on the right hand side of the Sweet-Ola Highway, just north of High Valley Road. You can also keep updated on the newsletter off to the left.

MAY 7th RELAY FOR LIFE MEETING RECAP
The Ola Rough Striders met Saturday at the Ola Inn to discuss further plans for the Relay For Life. Joyce Miller was happy to report that we have a total so far of $1045.00 in donations through our team members and our fundraiser at the Syringa Hall. Thanks again to all who donated items for the Syringa Hall sale! Future fun fund-raising events include a 4th of July Old Fashioned Picnic and Dance scheduled for July 2nd and an ATV ride and picnic at the Sutton’s cabin in High Valley scheduled for July 24th. Watch here for further details, or call Joyce or Dora if you would like to help out with these events.You may have noticed our barrel at the transfer station for recycling aluminum cans. Thanks to Keith and Shanti for this idea for further fund-raising! A special part of the Relay for Life is the Luminaria Ceremony. After the sun set, there is a special ceremony in honor of those who have lost their lives which culminates in a walk lit by luminaries decorated by folks in remembrance of loved ones or in honor of a loved one who has survived their battle with cancer. If you would like to make a luminary in honor of a loved one, you may pick up a bag to decorate for a $5.00 donation to our team. Call Joyce or Dora for more details or to get a bag.We are thrilled that our community is coming out strong in support of our team’s charter year at the Relay for Life. The Ola Rough Striders is second in Gem Co. in funds raised so far and Blane Carlock is the third top participant in the county. We’re thrilled, but not the least bit surprised because Ola always comes through!

OLA SCHOOL MEETS NEW ZEALAND
There were several proud parents, grandparents and members of the community present Friday night for the May Day program. The theme was Ola School meets New Zealand because of the close relationship our school has with a similar school in New Zealand. It was a great program and the kids did a wonderful job! The wind and rain stopped long enough for another successful Maypole dance!
