OLIE UPDATE FROM MIKE AND CHRIS

Here is an update on OLIE, our Ola dog, going on 3 years.  It was a long arduous summer with our big white "Akbash" cow dog, OLIE.  He gave Chris and I quite a few nervous days, as we fed him through the summer up in Timber Flat and Hi Valley, on the Hoff grazing lease, that the Carlocks have.  Allan and Sharon Sutton, who supplied all of the gas, and use of their 4 wheel drive ATV, as most of the places, where he guarded his heard,  was not accessible by any of my 2 wheel drive ATV's. This was a 26 mile round-trip endeavor, every other day.  This worked well for the first 2 months, but later in the grazing season the cattle spread out for the grass,  and after becoming familiar with all of the cows, it became obvious that he had attached himself with a Charlaise cow and calf, that could not be found.  I kept going up for the whole month of September to look for him, to no avail. I thought for sure he had been, either shot, or taken by the wolves. Then on September 30th, Chris and I were looking for him as always, after an hour and a half of searching, decided to call it a day.  Heading home we rounded a corner up in the forest, and there he was in the trail looking at me and barking, as if scolding me.  I was so surprised and excited to see him, I put on the brakes and almost went through the windshield, and Chris through me.  He was extremely mal nourished, with all of his ribs showing, but was alive.  We decided not to over feed him as it may have made him sick, but went back 8 hours later, and fed him again.  There is so much more to his story, but that is the long and short of it.  He now is guarding Butch and Joyce Biggers herd, and has been since October.  He gets fed everyday now, with a diet of 3 pounds of dry food, soft, heated dog food with oil and bread, and a snack of summer sausage.  I would like to thank the Ola Ladies club for donating enough money to get his worming done this year, and Allan and Sharon Sutton for the use of their ATV during the summer months, and all of the community that keeps us posted on his whereabouts.  Thanks to the whole Ola community for caring.  Mike and Chris

OLA COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS DINNER

Over 80 Ola residents and their guests attended the first Ola Community Christmas Dinner at the Ola Inn. The ham and turkey was delicious, complimented by a large variety of side dishes and home made desserts donated by our neighbors. Thanks again to John and Tracy Nunez and Lyn and Janice Carr for hosting this event and providing the entrees.

OLA SCHOOL COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

"DOUBLE TROUBLE CHRISTMAS" was the theme for this year's Christmas program.  A very cute program put on by the children from Ola Elementary.   The participation by the community is also welcomed and this year we had Marsha reciting "Let Me In" one of her favorites, a guitar solo by Kathy Willard, a beautiful song sung by Amanda, a piano number by Weston, a vocal selection by Bob L. and of course, several community "sing-alongs".  The children looked great and really enjoyed performing for their parents, grandparents and members of the community present in the audience. Santa finished off the evening by entering the Ola Hall to everyone singing "Here Comes Santa Claus".  Thank you! Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Sutton, Judi McCaulou and Norma Hyde,  without these wonderful ladies it would not be possible.  This year for the Ola Ladies Club Christmas party, rather than a gift exchange Ladies Club members were asked to make a small donation to the Ola School.  Last night a check was presented to Mrs. Davis for $800.00.  Thank you Ola Ladies Club members!!

AS A SECURITY PRECAUTION...

Along with a number of schools across the nation due to the tragedy last Friday and it being 12-21-12, security was present at the Ola School.  A Gem County Sheriff's Deputy spent the day in school making sure everyone was safe.  The children didn't seem distracted by his presence.

OLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY

 Today was the Ola School Christmas Party.  The children, dogs and teachers enjoyed the afternoon by exchanging gifts followed by Christmas snacks. The Emmett School District Superintendent  also attended the party.  Everyone had a great time!

Messenger Index, serving Gem County Greetings, Tomorrow is an interesting day in the psyche of our country. We have heard of no threats or concerns toward any schools in Emmett. However, there will be a more active presence of deputies on all our campuses Friday, December 21. The District, Emmett Police, and Gem County Sheriff are choosing to be proactive and give our students and parents a sense of comfort. They will be talking with visitors and staff and may ask for your identification. All staff should wear identification tomorrow. Guests to the schools must make sure they have checked in the office and have a visitor’s badge. Please assure all you talk to that there have been no threats or concerns. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BOISE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW IN THE WEST CENTRAL  AND BOISE MOUNTAINS AND THE CAMAS PRAIRIE...WHICH IS IN EFFECT  FROM 5 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 5 PM MST MONDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH WAS UPGRADED TO WINTER STORM WARNING.
