WISHING LOURABELLE A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Lourabelle Odermott Paepke Hutchison is turning 89 years old, this Thursday.   

Lourabelle taught school at Ola in the school year 1945-1946 and has been living in the Ola Valley ever since.  We wish her a happy birthday. 

THIS IS SUCH GREAT NEWS!!!

We are happy to announce....
The Animal Medical Center will be opening soon. I had the opportunity to meet with the new owner Dr. Dan Dombrowski and it is great knowing that AMC will be in the hands of this gentlemen. Dan is looking forward to opening up the doors in the next couple of weeks and meeting you and all of your furry kids. Dan is a LARGE and SMALL animal Vet. I will post more information as soon as I have the exact opening date. I look forward to seeing you all again!!

2015 COWBOY SUPPER/CHILI COOKOFF

This was from the fundraising Firemans Pancake Supper.

It was a full Hall last night at the Cowboy Supper/Chili Cook off. For years the Ola Ladies Club has been holding the Cowboy Supper in January it's just been the past couple of years that they've decided to "spice" it up a bit with the Chili Cook off. This year they had 11 entries from the community sharing they're own signature chili's. The judges had a difficult job as all were delicious. In the end, the judges managed to decide on their favorites, first, second, third and fourths places were awarded. We did have a couple tied for those places. The Cowboy Supper is also used as an opportunity for the Ola Ladies Club to present the Ola Fire Station with a check from the fundraising Firemans Pancake supper that was held in November. After the wonderful meal of chili, cornbread and dessert, we all were rewarded with an informative program by Tom B. and Lynn Gibson the Idaho State Brand Inspector. Tom gave us the history on brands and branding, while Mr. Gibson shared the importance of crisp, clean brands to help in identifying our cattle. Fun and full stomaches were had by all. We need to thank Joy Weaver for the endless hours researching the brands and a big thank you to everyone that made this evening a success. All of the proceeds will be donated of our Ola School.

DEADLINE FOR HAM RADIO CLASSES

Anyone interested in participating in the Ham radio classes must sign up with John at the Ola Inn and pay a $30.00 fee for the instructional materials. There must be at least 10 people signed up/paid by the end of January in order for the classes to be held. If we reach the enrollment goal, classes will be held once a week, two hours each, at the Ola Fire Hall.

On January 11, 2015, at approximately 4:50 pm, the Idaho State Police investigated a two-vehicle, injury crash at the intersection of Highway 52 and Highway 16 in Emmett.

Katie Ruth, 25, of Weiser, was driving a 2002 Mazda 626 eastbound on Highway 52. Sergey Sikorsky, 59, of Emmett, was driving a 1998 Subaru Legacy westbound on highway 52. Ruth was in the left turn lane turning into a parking lot, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by the Subaru.

Ruth and her two juvenile passengers were transported via ground ambulance to Walter Knox Memorial Hospital in Emmett. Sikorsky and his passenger, Natalya Sikorsky, 60, also of Emmett, were transported via ground ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Ruth and her passengers were all wearing safety restraints; it is unknown at this time if Sikorsky and his passenger were wearing seatbelts.

Highway 52 was partly blocked for about an hour and a half while crews worked to clear the scene. The crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

Squaw Butte

What a tribute to the sleeping woman lying along the Payette River north of Emmett her sleeping silhouette served as landmark to the weary pioneers as they traveled along the Oregon Trail and Goodales Cutoff. There is no other place or name in Gem County that references the American Indian. This is a tribute to the native people who lived, hunted and meandered here.

There is a book written in 1643 by then the Governor of Rhode Island concerning language of the Natives that defines squaw as an Indian woman.

Is this name change part of Obama's "Hope and Change" polices and 18 trillion dollar debt? This name change would take much time and dollars to accomplish. This non productive attitude is what attributes to America's slow down.

There is already a "Big Butte" southeast of Arco, Idaho, can you imagine the confusion of a G.PS traveler.

Many of us had family that came here before the turn of the century and still own places on this old mountain.

You may change the name on paper, but the "ole mtn' will always be Squaw Butte to us natives. This is part of our heritage.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR YEARS OF SERVICE

Yesterday afternoon was the Celebration Honoring Years of Service for Lan and Carlos, Lan serving 10 years as Gem County Commissioner and Carlos serving 2 years. Mark Ricco presented each with honorary service plaques while others shared stories of fond memories working with these two service minded men. Both will be missed but the community of Ola wishes them the best as they move forward to their next adventure.

NOT TO WORRY!

Squaw Butte will remain Squaw Butte. It was a full house for the meeting where the Squaw Butte name change was to be discussed. People from Ola, Emmett and Sweet were geared up to voice their opinion on the idea of the changing of Squaw Butte's name. No one had the chance, thanks to Councilman Petrie, he called for a show of hands, all hands went up against the name change and that was it. Those present were assured that no one has any intention or authority to change the name.
