At this time of the year, summer hummingbirds have departed and smaller numbers of fall migrants are using Ola area feeders.  Most, if not all, are young of the year now, so don't expect to see any colorful males.  All three regular species can still be identified though: Calliope is smallest with shortest bill and mostly black tail, Rufous is redder overall (but still green-backed) with rufous tail and most agressive, and Black-chinned is the "leanest" one with longest bill and tail, all black tail that flops up and down when hovering, and also agressive (especially toward other Black-chins).  Black-chinned are by far the most common now.  The average departure date 11 miles north of Ola is September 6 - 9 (depending on species), but we've hosted a Rufous (the longest migrant) as late as October 2, so you are encouraged to leave feeders up with fresh food (only partially filled to help prevent mold) until at least the middle of September (and later if you are still hosting feeding birds!).  I usually wait 7-10 days after the last bird just to be sure, as hummers will depart when their senses tell them to, and are not delayed due to the presence of feeders.  Each bird memorizes its migration feeding locations and will return to each of them the following year, so if food (flowers and/or feeders) is not available upon their arrival, they will wait around only a little while before being forced to look elsewhere.  And finally, "nectar" is only part of a hummer's diet.. more than half is very small insects.  If you have any questions, please email Fred xylemacres@gmail.com.

Thursday is a big day!!! It's the first day of school. Please drive carefully, observe school zone speed limits and stop for the school bus, DO NOT pass while loading and unloading.

A MESSAGE FROM GEM COUNTY MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT

We have isolated positive samples in mosquitoes near the Emmett Sewer Treatment Facility, near the N. Plaza Rd bridge, and near the intersection of W.  Central Rd. and Gem Ave.  There is no doubt that there is West Nile virus activity in the Sweet/Ola and Montour area as well.  Please encourage your neighbors to protect themselves from mosquitoes by using repellant, wearing long sleeves and pants, avoiding times when mosquitoes are most active (dusk is the critical time: 9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.). 

Most importantly, if you or any of your colleagues are responding to a call, on duty, or conducting some other activity that forces you to be active in an area where mosquito pressure is present, please protect yourself.  I don’t want one of our first responders, officers, fire fighters, and colleagues becoming ill with a disease like West Nile virus.  IT IS A SERIOUS DISEASE.

THE OLA REUNION COMING UP SOON!

The Ola Reunion will be held Sunday, September 8th. Church services will begin at 11:00AM with lunch served from 1:00PM-3:00PM.

 LOST CHOCOLATE LAB MIX (Sweet, Idaho)

My chocolate lab mix puppy ran off on Tuesday night 8/12 with my other two dogs in Sweet, Idaho. The other two dogs came back but the lab never did his name is Remi and he's 1.5 yrs old. He has a hunters orange collar but no tag he keeps loosing them. He's a very sweet dog and listens very well if you've seen him or have him please call me he's dry missed!

The Ola Rough Striders had a terrific year thanks to the hard work of team members, a wonderful team captain and the incredible generosity of the people that donated to this cause. The Ola Rough Striders were Top Team in earnings at $4,622.65 and our new team member Sasha was  Emmett Relay For Life Top Participant at earnings of $1,033.36. Great job Sasha!!

a white Blazer type vehicle with 2T license plates by Ola Post Office. If this vehicle is not claimed and moved by Monday 8/19 the sheriff will be called to have this abandoned vehicle towed. It is obstructing the flow of traffic. School is starting and this vehicle is in the way for the school bus to maneuver safely.

Peggy and Paul are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this Saturday at the Ola Community Hall at 1:00PM. The contribution of a salad would be greatly appreciated.

Relay For Life has finally arrived. Friday starting at 6PM at the Emmett City Park the Ola Rough Striders will be walking for a cure. All summer, the Ola Rough Striders have been working hard holding fundraisers to raise money for the American Cancer Society. October 29, 2012 we lost a team member to this terrible disease. Jerry Marx is always in our thoughts as we complete our third year as a team. Come by and visit our booth, we'd love to see you.

Even though we no longer need our Albertsons card for savings on groceries, by having the cashier swipe it we do get a gas discount. Remember to give it to the cashier, sometimes they forget to ask.

SOME TRESPASSING!

Someone has been snooping in the fire truck in back of the Ola Fire Station. The cab doors and compartment doors are being opened and not closed. Whom ever is trespassing and vandalizing our community this has to stop. We have never had any problems in the past, who in our community has made this change now?
