Not only do we value our ranchers for helping fight our fires but who better to ask what's the best way to get to the fire. The ranchers know every cow trail, ATV trail and what roads a fire truck can or can't use to get to the fire. Thank you!

LIGHTENING STRIKE FIRE

This evening GCFD#2 responded to it's first lightening strike fire of the season. The fire was up Holbrook Lane. Ola, Sweet and IDL trucks were dispatched. Not a large fire but one that was very hard to get to.
It's hot and dry!  I realize that we all think we know how to put out a campfire but "Smokey" wants to give us a refresher.  While you are on the Smokey Bear site browse around.

Speed limit lowered to 55 mph on stretch of Highway 16

An ITD crew changes a speed limit sign along Highway 16 Thursday morning.
STAR -- The speed limit along a portion of Highway 16 is now slower.
This morning the speed limit was lowered from 65 to 55 miles per hour on a four-mile stretch of the road.
The Idaho Transportation Department says they lowered it because there are simply too many accidents on the highway.
The speed limit reduction starts at the intersection with Idaho 44 and will reach just north of the Woodriver Cellars Winery.
ITD tells us in the last five years, there have been 55 crashes along that portion of the road.
One of those is an accident that took the life of 16-year-old Shauna Hill. The fatal crash happened last year at the intersection of Floating Feather Road and Highway 16.
ITD says they hope this change will help keep drivers safe.
"That portion of road has lots of access points, so there are a lot of cars that come and exit that road at any given time, so there are lots of speed variations along that section as it is," said ITD spokesperson Jessi Huizinga.
ITD tells us in the future there will be even more changes to this stretch of road, including clearing away roadside brush, making signs easier to read, adding lights at intersections, and increasing police patrols.

HWY 52 NORTH OPEN TO ONE LANE

Rock slides close Hwy. 52 from Horseshoe Bend to Emmett

EMMETT -- Traffic is being detoured around an eight mile section of State Highway 52, after two rock slides blocked the roadway.
In a Monday update, the Idaho Transportation Department said the road would remain closed throughout the day while crews analyze an irrigation canal suspected of causing the slides.
According to ITD, the road is closed in both directions between Plaza Road, about four miles east of Emmett, and Shelly Avenue, about 8 miles west of Horseshoe Bend.
Traffic is being re-routed onto Shell Rock Road between Montour and Plaza roads in Gem County. The entire highway is closed to commercial traffic between Horseshoe Bend and Emmett, ITD said.
ITD says crews cleared debris that fell from a steep hillside above the highway by mid-afternoon Sunday, but left the closure in place because of a continued threat from the unstable slope.
Meanwhile, ITD reports that officials from the Emmett Irrigation Company are looking into whether a canal above the highway is possibly leaking and saturating the hillside and causing the slides.
Crews are trying to avoid having to shut off the water in the canal to avoid damage to the downstream farmers who rely on the canal for water for their crops.
ITD will reopen the road when it is safe to do so.
The department advises motorists who normally would use Idaho 52 to call 511 or check the 511 Traveler Services website for the latest information.
